The California State Assembly unanimously passed a resolution today urging the Postal Service to issue a commemorative postage stamp honoring the American WWII servicemen and women of Japanese heritage. The State Senate will vote on the resolution this Thursday, January 24th. California has made a big step forward toward joining Hawaii in official state support of the stamp.
One campaign supporter who attended reported, "Assemblymember Mike Eng presented the resolution to the Assembly and was followed by 4 other assembly members who reinforced the resolution and asked for everyone's support. Before a vote was taken, the chairwoman asked who would like to co-author the bill--all 73 members who were present voted to be a co-author! A vote for the resolution was immediately taken and again, all 73 members voted in favor of the resolution! With the unanimous vote, the bill was passed!"
The resolution is the result of a coalition effort of the stamp campaign, and spearheaded in the legislature by Assemblyman Mike Eng, who represents the San Gabriel Valley area of Southern California. A list of those who sent letters of support to the state legislature is below. We wish to thank Assemblyman Eng, and all who have stood up for the stamp resolution, for their continued bold efforts to see that a commemorative stamp is created:
