The Congressional Letter of Support that has been circulating among the lawmakers in the House of Representatives during the past two months has to date garnered 17 signers (see list that follows). This "Dear Colleague" letter was circulated by Congressman Mike Honda, who chairs the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus. We had hoped to gain many more signers to the Honda letter, especially from Caucus members, but we have so far not received a positive response from many them. We believe that this is not from a lack of support, but from a lack of awareness of this Congressional letter that is among the hundreds of other requests that they receive each week.
We urge all of you who support this stamp to take a few minutes to contact your Representative and leave a brief message asking them to sign the letter. Call the Congress Switchboard toll-free at 1-800-828-0498 and ask for your Representative's office. If you are unsure who your Rep is, ask the operator at this toll-free number for help. You can also write a brief letter to your Rep. You may use the script that follows if you aren't sure what to say:
"Hi my name is _______, and I am a constituent who lives and votes in your district in the city of _________. My phone number is ________. I respectfully request that you sign the "Dear Colleague" letter of support for a U.S. commemorative postage stamp honoring the American World War II veterans of Japanese heritage, also called the "Nisei." This Congressional letter is being circulated by Congressman Mike Honda, and has already been signed by both Democrats and Republicans to recognize these patriots of World War II with a U.S. postage stamp. Thank you."
